Cash basis or accrual basis for UAE Corporate Tax: who gets the choice and who shouldn't take it
Businesses with revenue up to AED 3 million may prepare financial statements on the cash basis — but eligible is not the same as advisable. The rule, the mechanics of switching, and the judgement.
The rule
Taxable income starts from accounting income, and the default accounting basis is accrual. The concession: a business whose revenue does not exceed AED 3,000,000 in the tax period may prepare its financial statements on the cash basis instead — income when received, expenses when paid. Above the threshold, accrual is mandatory, with cash basis available only in exceptional circumstances approved by the FTA.
Why small businesses take it
- It matches the bank account — no accruals, no prepayments, no revenue recognised before cash arrives
- It defers tax where customers pay slowly: income lands in the period the cash does
- It pairs naturally with Small Business Relief — the same AED 3m revenue line governs both
Why eligible is not the same as advisable
- VAT does not follow: tax invoices drive VAT timing regardless of your accounting basis, so cash-basis books and the VAT return tell structurally different stories that must still reconcile
- Growth forces a conversion: cross AED 3m and the switch to accrual is a real exercise — opening balances, unbilled work, accrued expenses — done under time pressure
- Lenders and buyers think in accrual: cash-basis statements understate a growing business and complicate any financing or exit conversation
- Prepaid-heavy or inventory-heavy models distort badly on cash basis — a year's rent paid in month twelve makes a profitable year look like a loss
How Orbit applies this
Orbit keeps the underlying records accrual-complete either way — documents, dues and payments all dated — so a cash-basis business still sees its real receivables and payables, and the day it crosses AED 3m the accrual conversion is a report, not a reconstruction.
